On the occasion of the 12th Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne 2022, the Dzing-Dzing conference Recherche et dessin (Research and Drawing), a reflection on drawing as a tool for participating in and transforming research.

Drawing is scrutinised in all its forms and methods.
Drawing for invention, experimentation, drawing for scientific representation, drawing and planning, drawing and design… How does drawing act ? How is it hybridised through new methods of representation? Technical representations, in 3D or in 2D, data visualisation, mapping, technical diagrams and/or narrative forms are tied in with new forms of design: service design, public policy design, etc. We can also question how the medium and the media transform what research has to tell us, how they instrumentalise and subjectivise it and inspire imaginary constructs at the frontiers of science, technology and creativity.

Design research under the influence of drawing.
Drawing can give shape to a research field, by influencing the design process itself. It activates semantics of forms, writing, grammars to draw out meaning and there by enliven and disrupt the research process. How does that happen ? What is it about drawing, the action of drawing that disorientates or re-orientates design research ? What does it tell us about the status and the state of that research ?

Dzing-Dzing- Rechercheet Dessin
is organised around two themed half-day sessions on 18 and 19 May 2022, to contemplate the tools that might be used to express research and creativity in the light of new orientations and potential"bifurcations".

"Les Cahiers du Studio" andartist-illustrator

The two half-day sessions will be accompanied by an artist (Rosalie Blanc) and the documentation for the Dzing-Dzing conference will be based on the "Les Cahiers du Studio"system developed by L'Atelier des chercheurs.
"Les Cahiers du Studio" (The Studio Notebooks) is a collaborative chronological documentation tool for taking multimedia "notes" during an activity or event.

Rosalie Blanc is a graduate of ESADSE and holds an agrégation in design. As she loves to write, read and research, this year she is embarking on a thesis on the relationship between graphics and language. She is a graphic designer, but she also draws stories and it is in her capacity as an illustrator that she will be taking part in the Biennale.

L’Atelier des chercheurs (Sarah Garcin, Pauline Gourlet, Louis Eveillard)
L'Atelier des chercheurs is a collective of designers formed in 2013 who are involved increating free access, modular tools to transform the way we learn and work. These tools are mainly developed in collaboration with people working in the field, in settings as varied as schools, fablabs, third places and theatres.

The team in charge of theDzing-Dzing Notebook

Karolina Borkowska is currently an Azimuts postgraduate design and research student onthe CyDRe course at ESADSE. She is a researcher and graphic designer and she is developing a research approach characterised by a heightened curiosity focused on protocol, collection and analysis of archives and investigation, whilst questioning how that research is transmitted and editorialised.  In her research she has questioned subjectivity and the limits of certain standards such as in translation or writing. She has also examined the place of the written form, language and its traces to tell stories that have been forgotten or overlooked such as that of the Kashubs, a Slavic people.

Sylvia Fredriksson is a lecturer and researcher with the ECOLAB at ESAD OrléansThe work of designer and researcher Sylvia Fredriksson focuses on the relationship between design, technology and politics, drawing on the question of commons in particular to rebuild critical trajectories. Developing a two-pronged career as a designer and a lecturer since 2006, between 2016 and 2018 she worked at the research department of the Cité du design in Saint-Étienne, where, among other things, she was in charge of the Design des Instances  programme dedicated to new configurations of democratic spaces and tools, as well as curating the L’Expérience Tiers-Lieux – Fork The World exhibition for the Biennale Internationale Design 2017.

Lucie Sahuquet is an Azimuts postgraduate research on the CyDRe.
As a graphic designer interested in the political and social implications of written and spoken word, she questions the legitimacy and the function of sociolinguistic constructs.
Hers is a combined approach that draws on the humanities and design to make thesocial struggles at work in language visible, as well as the role of the designer in those struggles.

Caroline Zahnd is Director of Research at the ECOLAB, ESAD Orléans. Anartist and researcher, Caroline Zahnd is a graduate of the Beaux-Arts de Parisand ENSCI-Les Ateliers (Paris). She has been head of the ECOLAB research unit at ESAD Orléans since September 2020, where she runs the "Objects, crafts and computation" research programme with Olivier Bouton and Sylvia Fredriksson. As the elected teachers' representative on the board of directors of the national association of higher schools of art (ANdéA (Nationalassociation of art schools), she is the research coordinator on the association's executive committee. She is also a member of the specialist studies committee on research of the CNESERAC (National Council for Higher Education and Artistic and Cultural Research).
