WIP (Work in progress)

Actor, director and writer Pauline Sales asked four young playwrights, Penda Diouf, Vincent Farasse, Pauline Peyrade and Guillaume Poix to write four short, light pieces (15-20 minutes each) for the ten student actors in Year 28 at the École de la Comédie de Saint-Étienne, on the theme of the 10th Biennale: shifting work paradigms. These pieces will be rehearsed during the Biennale and performed, together or separately, between 3 and 8 April 2017 at different Biennale venues. They are designed to be played in any setting thanks to an ultra-simple, all-terrain scenographic space. They are meant to be for a general audience, but will appeal particularly to youngsters from age 14 up. Responding to a common writing protocol, they all have an autonomous existence, whilst still resonating with each other. Four episodes in a brief series, after a fashion, that all answer in their own way the multiple questions raised around the issue of work: Why do we work? To earn a living? To accomplish something, for our own satisfaction? To play an active role in society? To change the world? And is work ethic in itself still valid?
