La beauté du diable

A sack truck ("diable", i.e. "devil" in French) is a transport device that implements the physical principle of moving forces and the theory of leverage. In its innocent simplicity, it responds to a demiurgic multiplication of force that would make Hercules look feeble. It satisfies the need for light weight whilst freeing its user from the laws of gravity, the weight of things and the world, whilst allowing objects to move with a remarkable economy of means. It is moreover in this miracle of the multiplication of force combined with the very simplicity of the device that lies the beauty of the sack truck. It is already mentioned in Diderot and d'Alembert Encylopaedia, where it is explained that the device owes its French name to the horn-like shape of its arms. And this name, which vigorously evokes the forces of evil, cursed temptations and the dangerous delights of transgression, can only stimulate the creative passion of artists.
