Et lux fuit!
Design: lumière sur le beau

The invention of the incandescent light bulb in 1881 was more than just a technical innovation, it completely overturned the perception we have of the world around us by giving sight primacy over all the other senses. This innovation was not the prerogative of engineers for long. By embracing artificial light, designers have transcended the utilitarian object: off or on, the lamp gives us something to look at as much as it allows us to look at things. Works of art in their own right, lamps have been sculpting light and enhancing our interiors for a century, reconciling technological progress and the pursuit of aesthetics. This exhibition of emblematic lights from the 20th century attempts to throw some light on this object.
